Today Online: OCBC Cycle Singapore, Malaysia; next, Cycle Asia with Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia
KUALA LUMPUR - It started in 2009 with OCBC Cycle Singapore and was followed two years later by its Malaysian equivalent.Yesterday, Singapore-based event management and marketing company Spectrum Worldwide announced a further expansion into the region for its popular community cycling carnival with the addition of three new stops - Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia - under a new Cycle Asia banner.
It also hopes to expand the Cycle Asia network to Cambodia, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam in the next three years.
At its announcement in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, it was also revealed that a Cycle Indonesia is being planned for this June at Sentul City outside Jakarta, and a Cycle Philippines in Manila in October.
Chris Robb, Managing Director of Spectrum Worldwide, told TODAY the expansion caters to the growth of cycling across Asia and meets the demand for events from recreational and serious cyclists.
"The experience for participants will be similar to that of OCBC Cycle Singapore and Malaysia, where there will be community rides for kids and adults and events for serious riders," said Robb.
"Our festival format of mixing both amateur and professional-elite elements, combined with a Cycling and Lifestyle Village, a carnival and premier hospitality, has provided a growing number of cyclists with a fantastic platform to enjoy the sport."
The Gold Coast Festival of Cycling in September, organised by three-time Tour de France green jersey winner and festival ambassador Robbie McEwen, will also come under the Cycle Asia banner.
"Robbie is a big fan of Singapore; he sees the synergy of us being able to cross-promote his event on the Gold Coast, which is well-organised and has a great vibe about it," said Robb.
"It's great for us to be able to help encourage people to go to Robbie's event and, increasingly, cycling has bigger tourist implications.
"For example, we're working together with the Singapore Tourism Board to find ways to encourage more cyclists to come to Singapore and this network will provide opportunity for people to travel around the region and have family holidays (structured around cycling)."
Singapore Cycling Federation President Suhaimi Said believes Cycle Asia can boost the growth of elite cycling in the region.
"We can expand on the pro-criteriums to have nation- and Asia-wide criteriums to enhance the carnival beyond its community role," he said.
"We can also further strengthen the Asian Cycling Confederation, with these carnivals supporting the cycling events organised by the various national governing bodies in the region."

Four recreational cycling events in Singapore
A few notes - Singapore Cycle Fest is new and aims to secure a Guinness Book of World Records listing. The ride coincides with NTU Bike Rally which has integrated this event into their route. Cyclists on the round island ride will contribute to the world record convoy with the rest of the 5,000 cyclists before heading off for a tour of 'outer Singapore'.
OCBC Cycle Singapore has added a foldable category this year in response to the many foldables at the previous year's event. Expect to check out various bicycle bling that day!
The second OCBC Cycle Malaysia is already sold out but it is included as a reminder to look out for it later in the year. It can be part of the local cycling calendar as KL is just a short bus ride away these days.

- 23 Feb 2013 – NTU Bike Rally - registration open

Bike Hour is not complicated - "just get on your bike and pedal the sucker"
"The world’s biggest, completely unorganised, mass cycling rally will happen wherever you are, on Tuesday March 20, between 6 and 7 pm. Why? Because you will be riding your bike."
The instructions are explicit:
"Ride how you like, where you like, with whom you like, or ride alone. Just get on your bike and pedal the sucker. By doing so, you will be showing the world our staggering numbers, and unspoken yearning for safer, more edifying, cycling conditions."
Feel a need to share your ride by posting a note, photo, video at the Bike Hour Facebook page

See and Be Seen - Singapore’s First Night Cycling Safety Campaign
"See and Be Seen is our tiny effort to raise awareness about the need for visibility while cycling at night. As you know, cycling in Singapore is steadily increasing in popularity. Night cycling is particularly popular with the busy folks in Singapore, with the weather, and the traffic being more favorable to cyclists at night. However, many of these casual cyclists do not take note and use essential cycling safety equipments, when they head out to cycle.
This is where See and be Seen comes in. We plan to encourage more to be visible while night cycling through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/seeandbeseen), and also through our Night Ride on the 10th of March. The ride will start at 10pm, and continue till 2am. It will be a 30km night ride, where 250 participants will learn more about night cycling visibility, and pick up other tips and tricks of night cycling safely."

NTU Bike Rally 2011
The NTU Bike Rally is an excellent way to attempt your first round island ride of at least 128km; there are many rest stops and since all participants wear an event t-shirt, you can spot fellow-event cyclists both in front of and behind. Circling all the cyclists are the NTU Sports Club members and volunteers who work to keep the participants safe.
This is not a competitive race for cyclists to speed from check point to check point but rather a safe ride of discovery. This is typified by the NTU undergraduates, most of whom will be renting a bicycle for the occasion and many of whom are holiday cyclists. I rode a rental from Kranji to Serangoon one year before rain cancelled the ride and I can attest to the higher level of difficulty a rental bicycle is! Add to that the much longer hours under a hot sun that the newbies are exposed to and you will be inspired by their tenacity. Well of course, they do have youth on their side, so I am not abandoning my cmnfortable ride for a rental!
The registration fees are $15 for NTU Student/ Staff/ Alumni, and $26 for members of the public. Registration closes on 13th February 2011. For more details, see http://bikerally.ntusportsclub.sg/

NTU Bike Rally 2010 - Sun 21 Feb 2010
Many NTU students participate in the rally using rented bikes and pedal under a hot sun for 128km - that makes for a tough challenge but also lots of company along the entire stretch. The feeling of accomplishment for these cyclists is indeed considerable.
The registration fees are $15 for NTU Student/ Staff/ Alumni, and $23 for members of the public. Registration closes on 7th February 2010. See: http://bikerally.ntusportsclub.sg/

Green Wheelers pre-Climate Conference Ride, 29 Nov 2009
From the GreenWheelers site:
" We hope to encourage more Singaporeans to consider utilizing traveling alternatives that are environmentally-friendly - why should we remain ignorant of OUR Planet’s plea for help and continue polluting the environment with greenhouse gasses with our cars when there are greener alternatives?
Considering the size of Singapore, it should not be a challenge to adopt such alternatives - people in larger nations are now willing to adopt these green traveling habits despite having to travel over long distances.
What is Singapore waiting for?
Perhaps it's the weather, perhaps it's the worry of theft, or perhaps it's just about the hassle of bringing a change of clothes.
In conjunction with the Climate Conference in Copenhagen, G.Wheelers will be organising a public activity on 29 November 2009, a week ahead of the meeting in Denmark.
Come join us the Xtreme SkatePark at East Coast Park at 2 p.m. on Sunday, 29 November 2009, where we will share our cycling and urban skating tips. We want to encourage minimising the usage of motorised vehicles. Be part of this meaningful event!
