NTU Bike Rally 2013 sets off early tomorrow morning!

At 5am on Sunday (03 Mar 2013) morning, participants will register at the NTU Chinese Heritage Centre (as they used to in earlier years like 2003), and prepare to set off for their 138km round-island ride.

Amongst the many cyclists will be undergrads trying out their FIRST round-island on rental bicycles! They will battle the distance, heat and thirst in a transforming effort to break new sport boundaries. All the best to them!

See and Be Seen - Singapore’s First Night Cycling Safety Campaign

Yet another cycling project by students of NTU's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information - this time Grace Auyong write to introduce us to See and Be Seen, Singapore’s First Night Cycling Safety Campaign, which is a 30km ride night ride on 10 March 2012 which begins at 10pm at Xtreme Skate Park @ East Coast Park.

"See and Be Seen is our tiny effort to raise awareness about the need for visibility while cycling at night. As you know, cycling in Singapore is steadily increasing in popularity. Night cycling is particularly popular with the busy folks in Singapore, with the weather, and the traffic being more favorable to cyclists at night. However, many of these casual cyclists do not take note and use essential cycling safety equipments, when they head out to cycle.

This is where See and be Seen comes in. We plan to encourage more to be visible while night cycling through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/seeandbeseen), and also through our Night Ride on the 10th of March. The ride will start at 10pm, and continue till 2am. It will be a 30km night ride, where 250 participants will learn more about night cycling visibility, and pick up other tips and tricks of night cycling safely."

NTU Bike Rally 2012

NTU Sports Club's round-island Bike Rally is the only annual round island ride in Singapore. Organised principally for undergraduates, the event features multiple rest stops (about seven, I believe) but is open to the public and I have ridden with them since 2003. Registration is open!

This is an excellent way to tackle your first first round island ride; cycling on the periphery of Singapore on a Sunday with fellow-participants all togged out with the event cycling jersey. Along the way, NTU Sports Club volunteer route marshals are bussed about to keep you on track.

This ride is a good way to discover parts of Singapore you have not yet examined. Amongst the many NTU undergraduates would be first timers renting a bicycle for the occasion and suffering somewhat on their first long-distance ride. You will be inspired by their tenacity, but of course they have youth on their side!

NTU Bike Rally 2011

NTU Sports Club's round island Bike Rally is upon us once again. They have been identified in this blog in previous years as the only annual round island ride. Organised principally for undergraduates, the even is open to the public and I have ridden with them since 2003.

The NTU Bike Rally is an excellent way to attempt your first round island ride of at least 128km; there are many rest stops and since all participants wear an event t-shirt, you can spot fellow-event cyclists both in front of and behind. Circling all the cyclists are the NTU Sports Club members and volunteers who work to keep the participants safe.

This is not a competitive race for cyclists to speed from check point to check point but rather a safe ride of discovery. This is typified by the NTU undergraduates, most of whom will be renting a bicycle for the occasion and many of whom are holiday cyclists. I rode a rental from Kranji to Serangoon one year before rain cancelled the ride and I can attest to the higher level of difficulty a rental bicycle is! Add to that the much longer hours under a hot sun that the newbies are exposed to and you will be inspired by their tenacity. Well of course, they do have youth on their side, so I am not abandoning my cmnfortable ride for a rental!

NTU Bike Rally 2010 - Sun 21 Feb 2010

The much-awaited 128km round-island NTU Bike Rally has been announced to be on Sunday 21st February 2010. A new feature in next year's race is an optional 168km route - two additional loops to Tuas and the Causeway which will be open for a short window to the faster cyclists.

Many NTU students participate in the rally using rented bikes and pedal under a hot sun for 128km - that makes for a tough challenge but also lots of company along the entire stretch. The feeling of accomplishment for these cyclists is indeed considerable.

Valentine Day's ride on East Coast Park PCN

"Green is the new Pink Bike-a-Thon" - a scenic 28km through the East Coast Park Connector.

NTU Bike Rally 2009

The NTU Bike Rally is the best long distance public ride in Singapore and I have ridden with them since 2003.

This year the bike rally falls on Sunday, 15th March 2009 and for the second year, there are two start points - East Coast Park (128km) and Nanyang Technological University (85km).

The 128km route passes by Labrador Park, NTU, Kranji Reservoir, Seletar Reservoir, Pasir Ris Park and Changi Beach before ending back at East Coast Park.

This event by NTU Sports Club is easily the best round island cycling event in Singapore. The 128km event is non-competitive and provides multiple rest points against a backdrop of safety measures for fit but new riders to cope with distance. NTU undergrad cyclist killed by suspected drunk driver

A friend of mine saw the news footage last night. Blood was splattered near a bus stop at Jalan Bahar.

"He was the last man in the group because it was his duty to ensure the safety of the other 20 or so participants." - Straits Times, 15 Sep 2003

Poor chap. Biking advocate. Only son. Friendly and humble chap from condolences at togoparts. Gone just like that.

A cyclist or pedestrian is easy prey for an errant driver. While pleased that most of my cycling kakis are now well lit on roads and wear helmets these days, we would still need a miracle to survive a rear hit by an errant driver. Drunk drivers should lose their right to drive forever, even after a long spell in jail.
